Key drivers of vaccine hesitancy (misinformation about vaccine safety, philosophical and religious exemptions, and pandemic-related disruptions) are discussed, along with the demographic patterns of under-vaccination in the U.S. Comparisons are drawn to notable measles outbreaks in Samoa (2019) and the United Kingdom (2018) to highlight common themes of insufficient immunity leading to severe outcomes. The review evaluates what aspects of the public health response were effective, including emergency vaccination campaigns, community engagement, and interagency coordination, and what challenges and failures impeded control, such as resource limitations and delayed counter-misinformation efforts. The economic impact of the outbreak is also considered, with containment efforts costing millions of dollars. We summarize the lessons learned about the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage and suggest policy implications, which include stricter immunization requirements, proactive education to combat misinformation, and strengthening immunization infrastructure. Finally, future directions and recommendations are presented to prevent measles from regaining a foothold, emphasizing that sustained commitment to vaccination and public trust is critical to averting similar crises.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.4849066497880004,"endowment":2.4849066497880004,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"40827145","pmcid":"PMC12357784","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4413069762","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":15.7923,"citation_percentile":0.99445399,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2025,"count":1},{"year":2026,"count":10}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.cureus.com/articles/379966-the-2025-united-states-measles-crisis-when-vaccine-hesitancy-meets-reality.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.cureus.com/articles/379966-the-2025-united-states-measles-crisis-when-vaccine-hesitancy-meets-reality.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.88196","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40827145","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/12357784","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC12357784","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC12357784?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Vaccine Coverage and Hesitancy","Virology and Viral Diseases","Zoonotic diseases and public health"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Medicine","Measles","Family medicine","Environmental health","Virology","Vaccination","Vaccination Coverage","Vaccine Hesitancy","United States Of America","Public Health Coverage"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-05T13:06:24.961980Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
