The literature review uses a narrative synthesis to critically analyze the available evidence on four thematic areas, namely 1) the diagnosis of skin cancer and lesions, 2) the characterization of inflammatory skin diseases, 3) wound healing, and 4) the characterization of skin barrier integrity and hydration. Cross-domain comparison indicates that there are general biophysical effects across all applications, but with varying degrees of clinical validation. The main issues of concern are a critical lack of research standardization procedures, population heterogeneity of study groups, and the deployment of EIS in real-life clinical practices alongside artificial intelligence (AI)-related algorithms. The review ends with a set of research priorities that can be used to promote the translation of an adjunct diagnostic tool toward broader clinical validation across dermatological applications.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"42359211","pmcid":"PMC13291991","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W7162324931","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.5887715,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.cureus.com/articles/492650-skin-bioelectrical-impedance-as-a-diagnostic-tool-in-dermatology-a-literature-review-of-current-and-emerging-applications.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.cureus.com/articles/492650-skin-bioelectrical-impedance-as-a-diagnostic-tool-in-dermatology-a-literature-review-of-current-and-emerging-applications.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.cureus.com/articles/492650-skin-bioelectrical-impedance-as-a-diagnostic-tool-in-dermatology-a-literature-review-of-current-and-emerging-applications","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.109589","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42359211","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13291991/","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC13291991","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC13291991?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Electrical and Bioimpedance Tomography","Body Composition Measurement Techniques","Advancements in Transdermal Drug Delivery"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Bioelectrical impedance analysis","Standardization","Narrative review","Population","Current (fluid)","Skin barrier","Diagnostic test","Biomedical Applications","Clinical Dermatology","Bioelectrical Impedance Measurement","Diagnostic Screening Tool"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[{"name":"doi"}],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-02T07:26:06.219047Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
