{"doi":"10.7554/elife.91680.1","title":"Interface resistance of biomolecular condensates","abstract":"Abstract A hallmark of biomolecular condensates formed via liquid-liquid phase separation is that they dynamically exchange materials with their surroundings, and this can be crucial to condensate function. How is this rate of exchange controlled? Intuitively, the rate can be limited by the flux from the dilute phase or by the mixing speed in the dense phase. Surprisingly, recent experiments suggest that the exchange rate can instead be limited by the dynamics of molecules at the droplet interface, implying the existence of an “interface resistance”. We combine theory and simulation to show that interface resistance can arise when incident molecules transiently touch the interface without bonding to the dense phase, i.e., the molecules “bounce” from the interface. This occurs when the molecules can adopt conformations that limit the accessibility of their sticky regions.
