However, the metabolic profile of complex biological fluids such as blood is highly dynamic and this has limited the discovery of robust biomarkers. Hair grows relatively slowly, and both endogenous compounds and environmental exposures are incorporated from blood into hair during growth, which reflects the average chemical composition over several months. We used hair samples to study the metabolite profiles of women with pregnancies complicated by fetal growth restriction (FGR) and healthy matched controls. We report the use of GC-MS metabolite profiling of hair samples for biomarker discovery. Unsupervised statistical analysis showed complete discrimination of FGR from controls based on hair composition alone. A predictive model combining 5 metabolites produced an area under the receiver-operating curve of 0.998. This is the first study of the metabolome of human hair and demonstrates that this biological material contains robust biomarkers, which may lead to the development of a sensitive diagnostic tool for FGR, and perhaps more importantly, to stable biomarkers for a range of other diseases.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.3694478524670215,"endowment":4.3694478524670215,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25057319","pmcid":"PMC4107295","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2161070527","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Science Foundation Ireland","grant_id":"08/IN.1/B2083","title":"The development of a metabolic biomarker based screening test to identify uteroplacental insufficiency in pregnancy"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":1.9496,"citation_percentile":0.86556946,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":1},{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":8},{"year":2017,"count":5},{"year":2018,"count":10},{"year":2019,"count":7},{"year":2020,"count":12},{"year":2021,"count":8},{"year":2022,"count":6},{"year":2023,"count":10},{"year":2024,"count":7},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.thno.org/v04p0953.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.thno.org/v04p0953.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.thno.org/v04p0953.htm","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.7150/thno.9265","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25057319","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/185887","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4107295","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/journal_contribution/Hair_metabolomics_identification_of_fetal_compromise_provides_proof_of_concept_for_biomarker_discovery_/10135748","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/2381/39298","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://doi.org/10.7150/thno.9265","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4107295","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4107295?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://www.thno.org/v04p0953.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.7150/thno.9265","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.7150/thno.9265","host_type":""},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.7150/thno.9265","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Metabolomics and Mass Spectrometry Studies","Molecular Biology Techniques and Applications","Adipose Tissue and Metabolism","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences","Adult","Biomarkers","Case-Control Studies","Female","Fetal Growth Retardation","Hair","Humans","Infant, Newborn","Male","Metabolome"],"mesh_terms":["Adult","Female","Fetal Growth Retardation","Hair","Humans","Infant, Newborn","Male","Biomarkers","Case-Control Studies","Metabolome"],"keywords":["Metabolome","Metabolomics","Metabolite","Biomarker discovery","Biomarker","Metabolite profiling","Biology","Computational biology","Bioinformatics","Physiology","Proteomics","Biochemistry","Hair","Fetal growth restriction","Gc-ms.","Adult","Male","Fetal Growth Retardation","Short Research Communication","Infant, Newborn","Infant","610","Newborn","333","Case-Control Studies","Humans","Female","GC-MS","Biomarkers"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
