Analytically, a common approach as used in most moderation analyses is to add analytic interactions involving the predictor and moderator in the form of cross-variable products and test the significance of such terms. The narrow scope of such a procedure is inconsistent with the broader conceptual definition of moderation, leading to confusion in interpretation of study findings. In this paper, we develop a new approach to the analytic procedure that is consistent with the concept of moderation. The proposed framework defines moderation as a process that modifies an existing relationship between the predictor and the outcome, rather than simply a test of a predictor by moderator interaction. The approach is illustrated with data from a real study.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.772588722239781,"endowment":2.772588722239781,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"19162232","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4360895365","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5R01DA012249-02","title":"FURTHER DATA ANALYSIS ON THE NIDA CCTS"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5U01DA007673-07","title":"PSYCHOSOCIAL TREATMENTS FOR COCAINE ABUSE"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5U01DA007085-07","title":"PSYCHOSOCIAL TREATMENT OF COCAINE USE DISORDER"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1U01DA007663-01","title":"COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF COCAINE ABUSE TREATMENT"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"2U01DA007090-06","title":"COORDINATING CTR FOR TREATMENT OF COCAINE USE DISORDER"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"5P50MH045178-03","title":"CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF PSYCHOTHERAPY"}],"total_grants":6,"fwci":0.5466,"citation_percentile":0.70045695,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":1},{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":3},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://jds-online.org/journal/JDS/article/965/file/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://jds-online.org/journal/JDS/article/965/file/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.6339/jds.2009.07(3).462","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20161453","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.6339/jds.2009.07(3).462","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Insect-Plant Interactions and Control","05 social sciences","0501 psychology and cognitive sciences","0101 mathematics","01 natural sciences"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Moderation","Confusion","Interpretation (philosophy)","Econometrics","Variable (mathematics)","Scope (computer science)","Psychology","Outcome (game theory)","Computer science","Social psychology","Mathematics","Mathematical economics"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T05:17:19.220190Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
