{"doi":"10.62905/001c.120181","title":"Tracheostomy Care Curricula for Pediatric Residents: A Pilot Randomized Trial","abstract":"Background Single modality training programs have been implemented to address widespread deficiencies in tracheostomy knowledge and confidence among clinical providers, but investigations comparing training approaches are rare. Objective To compare in-person, virtual, and online module-based curricular approaches for tracheostomy care training in a pediatric residency. Methods A prospective study in 2021. Pediatric residents, grouped by Post Graduate Year (PGY)-level, were randomly assigned to a study arm: 1) online module plus in-person training (hybrid), 2) online module plus video training (online), or 3) online module only. Training completion, pre- and post-training survey and quiz responses were analyzed by study arm and PGY-level. Results Eighty-five residents enrolled. 26 (30.6%) completed in-person training, 22 (25.9%) completed video training, 37 residents (43.5%) in the module only group. Online module completion was low (11.8% total completed) and did not differ significantly by study arm (p=0.36) or PGY-level (p=0.06). For the 29 learners who completed both the pre- and post-survey (9 hybrid, 9 online, 11 modules only, p=0.38), there was a greater increase in overall confidence among the hybrid (1.8±0.5, p<0.001) and online (1.9±0.9, p<0.001) groups than in the module only group (0.6±0.7, p=0.03). Quiz scores improved from a mean of 61.0% (n=58) to 72.2% (n=41) post (p=0.003). In paired analysis (n=29), quiz scores improved within the online study arm (14.4±16.7%, p=0.03), PGY-1s (19.0±1.67%, p=0.006) and PGY-2s (21.2±21.0%, p=0.02).
