{"doi":"10.5772/intechopen.1012003","title":"Advances in Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery","abstract":"Epilepsy effects over 50 million people worldwide. Of those, 20–40% of children with epilepsy are considered medically refractory. When pharmacotherapy fails, surgical intervention remains an option to achieve seizure freedom or reduce seizure burden. In this chapter, we review the relevant presurgical evaluation patients undergo, the role of invasive monitoring, and the various types of epilepsy surgery that may help treat children with refractory epilepsy. We discuss in detail various types of surgery, including conventional resection, lobectomy, and disconnection surgeries, as well as innovations in the field including neuromodulation and LITT.
