Running economy (RE) and maximal oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text]O2max) were compared between track and treadmill (1% inclination) conditions in competitive level European distance runners who were fully habituated to treadmill running (n = 13). All runners performed an exercise test on running track and on treadmill. While [Formula: see text]O2max was similar on the track and on the treadmill (68.5 ± 5.3 vs. 71.4 ± 6.4 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1), p = 0.105, respectively), superior RE was found on the track compared to the treadmill (215.4 ± 12.4 vs. 236.8 ± 18.0 O2 ml·kg(-1)·km(-1), p < 0.001). RE on the track was strongly correlated with RE on the treadmill (r = 0.719, p = 0.006). The present findings indicate that high-level distance runners have significantly better RE but not [Formula: see text]O2max on the track compared to treadmill. This difference may be due to biomechanical adjustments. As RE is strongly correlated between the two conditions, it would be reasonable to assume that interventions affecting RE on the treadmill will also affect RE on the track.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.4965075614664802,"endowment":3.4965075614664802,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"26060340","pmcid":"PMC4447762","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2066251888","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.2009,"citation_percentile":0.76209472,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":5},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":5},{"year":2020,"count":7},{"year":2021,"count":4},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":2}],"oa_status":"green","license":"cc-by-sa","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/34932961dfc74b698f6debfc6b73dfa5","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/34932961dfc74b698f6debfc6b73dfa5","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://publisherspanel.com/icid/pdf/1144418","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5604/20831862.1144418","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26060340","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/108379/","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4447762","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://doi.org/10.5604/20831862.1144418","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4447762","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4447762?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Muscle metabolism and nutrition","Sports Performance and Training","Cardiovascular and exercise physiology"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Treadmill","Running economy","VO2 max","Elite athletes","Physical therapy","Track and field athletics","Long distance runners","Distance running","Athletes","Track (disk drive)","Medicine","Physical medicine and rehabilitation","Mathematics","Computer science","Heart rate","Internal medicine","Maximal Oxygen Uptake","Treadmill Test","Running Performance","Running Track"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-07T16:05:20.156045Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
