OBJECTIVE: To establish an association between the nutritional status of 6-10 year old boys and girls and blood pressure. POPULATION AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted in 6-10 year old schoolboys and schoolgirls. Outcome measures and indicators studied included nutritional status as per body mass index; presence of central fat mass distribution estimated by waist circumference; and blood pressure (height, age and gender tables). Differences in mean values were analyzed using a Student's t test. The relationship between outcome measures was estimated using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Linear regression models were adjusted for systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure using the following explanatory outcome measures: z scores for body mass index, age, gender and waist circumference. RESULTS: Five hundred and fifty five male and female children were evaluated; they were all younger than 11 years old. A total of 26.3% was overweight and 15.1% was obese. The prevalence of hypertension was 1.08%. Results show a positive linear relationship between systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and age and waist circumference, and a trend is observed between systolic blood pressure and the body mass index z score (p = 0.068). CONCLUSION: Overweight and obesity were the most common nutritional disorders in schoolaged children in the studied district; there is an association between age, waist circumference, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and between systolic blood pressure and the body mass index z score.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.302585092994046,"endowment":2.302585092994046,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23568063","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2141954092","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.9576,"citation_percentile":0.79814558,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5546/aap.2013.eng.92","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5546/aap.2013.eng.92","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://www.sap.org.ar/docs/publicaciones/archivosarg/2013/v111n2a02e.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23568063","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Obesity, Physical Activity, Diet","Dermatoglyphics and Human Traits","Blood Pressure and Hypertension Studies","Blood Pressure","Child","Cross-Sectional Studies","Female","Humans","Male","Nutritional Status"],"mesh_terms":["Blood Pressure","Child","Cross-Sectional Studies","Female","Humans","Male","Nutritional Status"],"keywords":["Waist","Blood pressure","Body mass index","Medicine","Overweight","Circumference","Obesity","Internal medicine","Diastole","Waist-to-height ratio","Cross-sectional study","Cardiology","Demography"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-07T06:40:20.419955Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
