{"doi":"10.5281/zenodo.18050102","title":"Untargeted Analysis of Areca Nut and Gutkha Commercial Products","abstract":"We investigated the chemical composition of areca nut and gutkha products, which are commonly chewed in South and Southeast Asia. While these products are known to be addictive and carcinogenic, causing oral lesions and cancers, the specific chemical compounds responsible remain poorly understood. The study identified 149 unique compounds in the tested products, with 142 being newly discovered and potentially specific to areca nut-containing products. Seven compounds were previously found in smokeless tobacco. We are still evaluating the toxicity profiles of these newly identified compounds and planto expand their analysis using gas chromatography with HRMS. Our findings aim to create a comprehensive library of toxicants and carcinogens, which will help understand the mechanisms behind these products’ harmful effects.
