The collision between the Likud veterans and Sharon deepened the rift which, since the mid-1990s, had separated the heirs into three groups. The bitter struggle against Sharon took the Land of Israel heirs back to familiar, cold outbacks – this time, in the internal opposition. Sharon tried to avoid a Likud Central Committee convention, claiming that the decision as to the merger fell squarely under the authority of the Prime Minister. Sharon was riding a wave of tremendous public support, while Benjamin Netanyahu was the target of media criticism.
