{"doi":"10.4314/hmrj.v23i2.4","title":"Socio-demographic and pharmacogenomic correlates of sleep quality in HIV infected Nigerians on efavirenz-based antiretroviral therapy","abstract":"Background: Efavirenz is commonly prescribed for HIV treatment in Nigeria. However, neuropsychiatric side effects like poor sleep quality often lead to treatment discontinuation. We investigated factors associated with poor sleep quality in HIV patients on long-term efavirenz-based antiretroviral therapy (ART). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 316 HIV-infected patients on efavirenz-based ART for =5 years at the Jos University Teaching Hospital from September 2018 to December 2019. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Demographic, clinical, and CYP2B6 pharmacogenetic data were also collected. Logistic regression identified factors independently associated with poor sleep quality. Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 43.7%. Widowed participants had 8.9 times higher odds of poor sleep versus married ones. Those with secondary and tertiary education had 4.5- and 17.6-times higher odds respectively compared to those primary/no formal education. Unemployed participants had 3.4 times higher odds than employed ones. CYP2B6 genotypes were not significantly associated with poor sleep. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality was prevalent and linked with socioeconomic variables rather than pharmacogenetic factors in individuals receiving long-term efavirenz medication.
