{"doi":"10.4269/ajtmh.2005.72.503","title":"HIGH PREVALENCE OF BARTONELLA QUINTANA ENDOCARDITIS IN SFAX, TUNISIA","abstract":"<jats:p><jats:italic>Bartonella quintana</jats:italic> is a fastidious microorganism associated with blood culture negative endocarditis. In this study, 40 sera with cross-reactivity between <jats:italic>Chlamydia</jats:italic> species from patients from Sfax, Tunisia, were serologically tested for <jats:italic>Bartonella.</jats:italic> Thirteen sera were positive for <jats:italic>Bartonella</jats:italic> with IgG titers ≥1:800. Western blot and cross-absorption confirmed the diagnosis of <jats:italic>Bartonella quintana</jats:italic> endocarditis in 12 cases and <jats:italic>Bartonella henselae</jats:italic> endocarditis in 1 case. These sera were also positive by LightCycler nested PCR amplification for the <jats:italic>rnpb</jats:italic> (7 of 13) and <jats:italic>fur</jats:italic> (11of 13) genes. Eleven patients had a definite diagnosis of endocarditis, which represents 9.8% of all endocarditis.
