{"doi":"10.4269/ajtmh.16-0516","title":"Detection of Wolbachia in Aedes albopictus and Their Effects on Chikungunya Virus","abstract":"<jats:p><jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic>-based vector control strategies have been proposed as a means to augment the currently existing measures for controlling dengue and chikungunya vectors. Prior to utilizing <jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic> as a novel vector control strategy, it is crucial to understand the <jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic>–mosquito interactions. In this study, field surveys were conducted to screen for the infection status of <jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic> in field-collected <jats:italic>Aedes albopictus</jats:italic>. The effects of <jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic> in its native host toward the replication and dissemination of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was also studied. The prevalence of <jats:italic>Wolbachia</jats:italic>-infected field-collected <jats:italic>Ae. albopictus</jats:italic> was estimated to be 98.6% (<jats:italic>N</jats:italic> = 142) for females and 95.1% (<jats:italic>N</jats:italic> = 102) for males in the population studied. The <jats:italic>Ae. albopictus</jats:italic> were naturally infected with both <jats:italic>w</jats:italic>AlbA and <jats:italic>w</jats:italic>AlbB strains.
