{"doi":"10.35940/ijb.b2001.101221","title":"Digital Morphometrics: A Tool for Leaf Morpho- Taxonomical Studies","abstract":"<jats:p>Leaves are most important part of the plant and can\nbe used for the identification of a taxon. An appropriate\nunderstanding of leaf development in terms of shape and\nresponsible abiotic factors is necessary for improvement in plant.\nLeaf shape variation could be evaluated successfully, and the\nsymmetrical and asymmetrical elements of the overall shape\nvariation could be detected. The aim of the present study was to\nestablish a quantitative analysis method of leaf shape by elliptic\nFourier descriptors and principal component analysis (EF-PCA).\nEF-PCA describes an overall shape mathematically by\ntransforming coordinate information concerning its contours\ninto elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFDs) and summarizing the\nEFDs by principal component analysis. We can be able to extract\nsix variables by using leaf specimen images from field and\nherbarium specimens. In the present study, total leaf area with\nrespect to notch area is more variable within species. Within a\nspecies the major source of the symmetrical elements may be\ngoverned by genotypic features and the asymmetrical elements\nare strongly affected by the environment.
