{"doi":"10.3390/ijms25126446","title":"Support Vector Machine-Based Formula for Detecting Suspected α Thalassemia Carriers: A Path toward Universal Screening","abstract":"), which is not elevated. The objective of this study was to determine whether mathematical formulas are effective for detecting suspected α-thal. The data were obtained from the database of the prevention program for detecting couples at risk for having a child with hemoglobinopathy. Red Blood Cells (RBC) indices were analyzed using mathematical formulas, and the sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated. Among 1334 blood counts suspected of α-thal analyzed, only the Shine and Lal and the Support Vector Machine formulas revealed high sensitivity and NPV. Sensitivity was 85.54 and 99.33%, and NPV was 98.93 and 99.93%, respectively. Molecular defects were found in 291, and 81 had normal α genes. Molecular analysis was not performed in 962 of the samples. Based on these results, mathematical formulas incorporating one of these reliable formulas for detecting suspected α or β thalassemia carriers in the program of the automatic analyzers can flag these results, increase the awareness of the primary physicians about the carrier risk, and send an alert with a recommendation for further testing.","journal":"International Journal of Molecular Sciences","year":2024,"id":461031,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":3,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9511,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":1289987,"name":"Sari Peretz","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289988,"name":"Hiba Zoabi","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289989,"name":"Harel Eitam","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289587,"name":"Leonid Livshits","orcid":"0000-0002-2405-7947","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289990,"name":"Dvora Filon","orcid":null,"position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":846624,"name":"Carina Levin","orcid":"0000-0002-7774-3529","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289588,"name":"Ariel Koren","orcid":"0000-0002-6517-9203","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1289586,"name":"Idit Lachover‐Roth","orcid":"0000-0001-8968-4143","position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":59,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-07-19T02:04:12.271488Z","pmid":"38928152","pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
