{"doi":"10.3390/ijerph18147555","title":"Breast Cancer Characteristics in the Population of Survivors Participating in the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center Program 2002–2019","abstract":"The destruction of World Trade Center on 11 September 2001 exposed local community members to a complex mixture of known carcinogens and potentially carcinogenic substances. To date, breast cancer has not been characterized in detail in the WTC-exposed civilian populations. The cancer characteristics of breast cancer patients were derived from the newly developed Pan-Cancer Database at the WTC Environmental Health Center (WTC EHC). We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program breast cancer data as a reference source. Between May 2002 and 31 December 2019, 2840 persons were diagnosed with any type of cancer at the WTC EHC, including 601 patients with a primary breast cancer diagnosis (592 women and 9 men). There was a higher proportion of grade 3 (poorly differentiated) tumors (34%) among the WTC EHC female breast cancers compared to that of the SEER-18 data (25%). Compared to that of the SEER data, female breast cancers in the WTC EHC had a lower proportion of luminal A (88% and 65%, respectively), higher proportion of luminal B (13% and 15%, respectively), and HER-2-enriched (5.5% and 7%, respectively) subtypes. These findings suggest considerable differences in the breast cancer characteristics and distribution of breast cancer intrinsic subtypes in the WTC-exposed civilian population compared to that of the general population. This is important because of the known effect of molecular subtypes on breast cancer prognosis.","journal":"International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health","year":2021,"id":201383,"datarank":0.31191623125197543,"base_score":2.0794415416798357,"endowment":2.0794415416798357,"self_citation_contribution":0.31191623125197543,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.31191623125197543,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":46.1,"corpus_rank":6947,"citation_count":7,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":true,"is_dataset_confidence":0.5581,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2021-01-01","fair_score":4.1667,"fair_percentile":4.891470498318557,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":780157,"name":"Yian Zhang","orcid":"0000-0002-4033-211X","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":363769,"name":"Nedim Durmuş","orcid":"0000-0002-4862-6497","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":363772,"name":"Sultan Pehlivan","orcid":"0000-0003-2848-7773","position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":780863,"name":"Adrienne Addessi","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":697812,"name":"Freya Schnabel","orcid":"0000-0002-6393-7453","position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":363770,"name":"Yongzhao Shao","orcid":"0000-0003-0641-6755","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":363773,"name":"Joan Reibman","orcid":"0000-0001-7878-1511","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":317200,"name":"Alan A. Release the data at publication with no embargo, no registration wall, and no approval step — NIH's zero-embargo public- access rule (NOT-OD-25-101) has already made 'available at publication' the federal baseline for the article; the data should not lag behind it.
