{"doi":"10.3389/fpubh.2023.1032420","title":"The next phases of the Migrante Project: Study protocol to expand an observatory of migrant health on the Mexico—U.S. border","abstract":"Background: Mexican migrants traveling across the Mexico-United States (U.S.) border region represent a large, highly mobile, and socially vulnerable subset of Mexican nationals. Population-level health data for this group is hard to obtain given their geographic dispersion, mobility, and largely unauthorized status in the U.S. Over the last 14 years, the Migrante Project has implemented a unique migration framework and novel methodological approach to generate population-level estimates of disease burden and healthcare access for migrants traversing the Mexico-U.S. border. This paper describes the rationale and history of the Migrante Project and the protocol for the next phases of the project. Methods/design: = 1,200 each). Both survey waves will obtain data on demographics, migration history, health status, health care access, COVID-19 history, and from biometric tests. In addition, the first survey will focus on non-communicable disease (NCD), while the second will dive deeper into mental health and substance use. The project will also pilot test the feasibility of a longitudinal dimension with 90 survey respondents that will be re-interviewed by phone 6 months after completing the face-to-face baseline survey. Discussion: Interview and biometric data from the Migrante project will help to characterize health care access and health status and identify variations in NCD-related outcomes, mental health, and substance use across migration phases. The results will also set the basis for a future longitudinal extension of this migrant health observatory. Analyses of previous Migrante data, paired with data from these upcoming phases, can shed light on the impact of health care and immigration policies on migrants' health and inform policy and programmatic responses to improve migrant health in sending, transit, and receiving communities.","journal":"Frontiers in Public Health","year":2023,"id":365427,"datarank":0.3690920893078962,"base_score":1.9459101490553132,"endowment":1.9459101490553132,"self_citation_contribution":0.29188652235829704,"citation_network_contribution":0.07720556694959918,"self_endowment_contribution":0.29188652235829704,"citer_contribution":0.07720556694959918,"corpus_percentile":51.43498104742013,"corpus_rank":6279,"citation_count":6,"citer_count":3,"citers_with_citation_signal":3,"citers_with_endowment":3,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":true,"is_dataset_confidence":0.8445,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2023-01-01","fair_score":20.8333,"fair_percentile":36.38031183124427,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":409490,"name":"Gudelia Rangel","orcid":"0000-0003-3376-152X","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1120930,"name":"Catalina Correa","orcid":"0000-0003-4998-1228","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":936432,"name":"Leah Bakely","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":770595,"name":"Jesús Eduardo González-Fagoaga","orcid":"0000-0003-1855-0564","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":935853,"name":"Ahmed Ali Asadi-González","orcid":"0000-0001-8262-7613","position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":973176,"name":"Catalina Amuedo‐Dorantes","orcid":"0000-0002-4750-309X","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":534875,"name":"Xiao Zhang","orcid":"0000-0001-8043-1721","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":960389,"name":"Carlos Magis‐Rodríguez","orcid":"0000-0001-5481-1253","position":8,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":593292,"name":"Félice Lê‐Scherban","orcid":"0000-0003-1920-724X","position":9,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1120931,"name":"Sylvia Guendelman","orcid":"0000-0001-9690-3121","position":10,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":936433,"name":"Emilio A. A lab website is not an archive: it has no retention commitment and no accession. For clinical / human-subjects data, deposit in dbGaP or the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA).","Attach a standard, machine-readable open licence to the deposit — CC0 or CC BY, which is what Horizon Europe and most funders expect — and print the licence identifier in the paper. 'Free to use' is not a licence: it grants nothing a reuser's institution can rely on.","Cite the dataset in the reference list like a publication — creator, year, title, repository, DOI/accession — and cite it in-text where it is used. Only a reference- list entry is machine-readable to Crossref/DataCite, and only a citation lets the data earn credit. Cite the clinical / human-subjects repository accession (e.g. from dbGaP or the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA)) in the reference list.","Release the data in an open, community-standard format (CSV/TSV, JSON, HDF5, NetCDF, FASTQ, VCF, NIfTI…) instead of — or alongside — any proprietary or instrument-native format, and name the format in the paper. A dataset that needs a €2,000 licence to open is not reusable."],"model":"deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash","agent_version":"fair_agent_v8","fulltext_source":"unpaywall_pdf"},"fair_model":"deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash","fair_agent_version":"fair_agent_v8","fair_fulltext_source":"unpaywall_pdf","fair_has_llm":true,"fair_computed_at":"2026-07-20T12:49:33.277656Z","clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
