Objective: To examine the association of major comorbidities and COVID-19 mortality in men and women separately. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort analysis using a large electronic health record (EHR) database in the U.S. We included adult patients with a clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 who also had necessary information on demographics and comorbidities from January 1, 2016 to October 31, 2021. We defined comorbidities by the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) using ICD-10 codes at or before the COVID-19 diagnosis. We conducted logistic regressions to compare the risk of death associated with comorbidities stratifying by sex. Results: A total of 121,342 patients were included in the final analysis. We found significant sex differences in the association between comorbidities and COVID-19 death. Specifically, moderate/severe liver disease, dementia, metastatic solid tumor, and heart failure and the increased number of comorbidities appeared to confer a greater magnitude of mortality risk in women compared to men. Conclusions: Our study suggests sex differences in the effect of comorbidities on COVID-19 mortality and highlights the importance of implementing sex-specific preventive or treatment approaches in patients with COVID-19.","journal":"Frontiers in Public Health","year":2022,"id":275556,"datarank":0.6037123818792028,"base_score":2.302585092994046,"endowment":2.302585092994046,"self_citation_contribution":0.3453877639491069,"citation_network_contribution":0.2583246179300959,"self_endowment_contribution":0.3453877639491069,"citer_contribution":0.2583246179300959,"corpus_percentile":67.31646940512107,"corpus_rank":4226,"citation_count":9,"citer_count":9,"citers_with_citation_signal":6,"citers_with_endowment":6,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":true,"is_dataset_confidence":0.7078,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2022-01-01","fair_score":6.25,"fair_percentile":25.068786303882604,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":945081,"name":"Jia Wang","orcid":"0000-0003-3868-8392","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":279970,"name":"Yuanhao Zu","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":486026,"name":"Yilin Yoshida","orcid":"0000-0003-0441-2697","position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":11,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-07-19T00:28:21.971703Z","pmid":"36033801","pmcid":"PMC9412184","fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":22.2222,"fair_a":25.0,"fair_i":40.0,"fair_r":37.5,"fair_zscore":-1.1162,"fair_rationale":{"fair_score":6.25,"has_llm":true,"taxonomy_version":"fair_taxonomy_v5","dimensions":{"F":{"name":"Findable","score":22.22,"criteria":[{"key":"f_dataset_pid","label":"Persistent identifier for the data","kind":"llm","weight":2.0,"fraction":0.0,"verdict":"no","evidence":"Data are however available from the authors upon reasonable request and with permission of Healthjump database and the COVID-19 Research Database consortium.","grounded":true,"rationale":"No persistent identifier scheme string or data URL is provided for the dataset; only prose description of availability.","anchors":["RDA-F1-01D — FAIR Data Maturity Model: 'Data is identified by a persistent identifier' (priorit","RDA-F1-02D — FAIR Data Maturity Model: 'Data is identified by a globally unique identifier'","FsF-F1-02D — F-UJI/FAIRsFAIR: 'Data is assigned a persistent identifier'"],"scored":true,"signal":null},{"key":"f_repository_named","label":"Named repository","kind":"llm","weight":2.0,"fraction":0.0,"verdict":"no","evidence":"Data are however available from the authors upon reasonable request and with permission of Healthjump database and the COVID-19 Research Database consortium.","grounded":true,"rationale":"The data are held by the authors, a natural person, not a repository; the consortium is a data source, not a repository for this study's data.
