{"doi":"10.3389/fpain.2022.941476","title":"Editorial: Chronic Pain and Health Disparities in Older Adults With Complex Needs","abstract":"Decades of research have demonstrated that disparities in pain management access and outcomes exist (1-4). These disparities are present in all health care settings (i.e., primary care, the emergency room, post-operative, and palliative) across all types of pain (i.e., cancer, neuropathic, acute, chronic) (5-9). Despite this overwhelming evidence, little progress has occurred because barriers to equitable healthcare exist at multiple levels from the individual level to healthcare providers, healthcare systems, and local governments A person with pain may not believe that non-pharmacologic therapies such as behavioral therapy will work and thus may not follow up or engage in these proven treatments, especially if there is a share of cost The implicit biases (race, gender etc.) of healthcare providers contribute to differences in pain intervention access and medication doses for patients who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and women (1, 2). Despite extensive studies that non-pharmacologic therapies such as massage and physical therapy are helpful for pain management, these services are inconsistently covered by health insurance that limits access to people who can pay out of pocket ( The complicated intertwining of pain management and the opioid epidemic is leading to shortages of providers willing to manage pain (18).","journal":"Frontiers in Pain Research","year":2022,"id":297978,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":7,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9548,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2022-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":986544,"name":"Margaret Danilovich","orcid":"0000-0003-3468-2495","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":394762,"name":"Maile Karris","orcid":"0000-0001-5614-030X","position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":40,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-07-19T00:31:31.270564Z","pmid":"35836738","pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
