Synthesizes definitional debates to provide the reader with a comprehensive but useful understanding of kinship. Kinship is visible, especially in the Middle Eastern context, because an individual’s name indicates their kinship lineage. It is sticky because it gives an individual not only an in-group (member of family X), but also a specific orientation within that in-group (son of A, grandson of B, member of family X). As such, kinship is a useful social identity marker because it is easy to determine and difficult to falsify. The chapter shows how these kinship politics manifest in the Arab Gulf States.
