Though classical\nplant breeding has contributed enormously in achieving\ngenetic gains in different crops including rice, the\nchallenges imposed by resource constraints as well as\ngreater anticipated demand need better tools to meet the\nexpectations. Molecular breeding which uses modern\ngenomic tools integrated with plant breeding offers\nenormous potential for improvement of crop varieties. The\npresent review focusses on the achievements of ICAR-IARI\nin molecular breeding in rice wherein as many as eight rice\nvarieties were incorporated with genes governing\nresistance/tolerance to different traits and released for\ncommercial cultivation in India. The various factors which\nenabled the successful integration of molecular breeding\nincluding development of infrastructure, human resources\nand the genetic and genomic resources have been\ndiscussed in detail. All the examples of translational\nresearch are from the marker assisted backcross breeding\nstrategy, which limits the scope for achieving yield gains.\nIn the foregoing discussion, the challenges and the\nopportunities for implementation of molecular breeding in\nrice to realize the full potential of these tools in plant\nbreeding are discussed based on the decade long\nexperience, which may be valuable for other crops as well.
","journal":"Indian Journal of Genetics and Plant Breeding (The)","year":2019,"id":43826,"datarank":0.5721236505246591,"base_score":2.4849066497880004,"endowment":2.4849066497880004,"self_citation_contribution":0.37273599746820013,"citation_network_contribution":0.19938765305645892,"self_endowment_contribution":0.37273599746820013,"citer_contribution":0.19938765305645892,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":11,"citer_count":7,"citers_with_citation_signal":6,"citers_with_endowment":6,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":207454,"name":"S.
