{"doi":"10.31219/osf.io/mv6r4","title":"Longitudinal Relations Between Sleep Duration and Academic Achievement in U.S. Elementary School Children","abstract":"Sleep duration is a modifiable health behavior that is causally related to children’s school functioning. Yet whether children’s sleep duration and academic achievement display developmental interrelations over a multiyear period is currently unknown. Also unknown is whether socio-demographic characteristics moderate these relations. We examined whether sleep duration was bidirectionally related to upper elementary schoolchildren’s academic achievement in a nationally-representative U.S. cohort (N=11,240) using random-intercept cross-lagged panel modeling and moderation tests by race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), and disability. We observed few significant cross-lagged within-person relations between sleep duration and academic achievement. Family SES but no other socio-demographic characteristic moderated these effects. Among children experiencing socioeconomic barriers, obtaining more sleep significantly predicted higher academic achievement the following year while higher academic achievement predicted obtaining more sleep per night the following year. These effect sizes were negligible. This suggests that efforts to support optimal sleep health in elementary school may benefit all children, with only marginally higher returns among populations of children experiencing socioeconomic barriers.","journal":"OSF Preprints (OSF Preprints)","year":2024,"id":493456,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":0,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9598,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":1139837,"name":"Qingqing Yang","orcid":"0000-0003-2400-8771","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":853066,"name":"Paul L.
