{"doi":"10.31219/osf.io/ekbpr","title":"GATTACA AS A LENS ON CONTEMPORARY GENETICS Marking 25 years into the film’s “not-too-distant” future","abstract":"The 1997 film Gattaca has emerged as a canonical pop culture reference used to discuss modern contro-versies in genetics and bioethics. It appeared in theaters a few years prior to the announcement of the“completion” of the human genome (2000), as the science of human genetics was developing a renewedsense of its social implications. The story is set in a near-future world in which parents can, with tech-nological assistance, influence the genetic composition of their offspring on the basis of predicted lifeoutcomes. This moment—25 years after the film’s release—offers an opportunity to reflect on where so-ciety currently stands with respect to the ideas explored in Gattaca. Here, we review and discuss severalactive areas of genetic research—genetic prediction, embryo selection, forensic genetics, and others–thatinterface directly with scenes and concepts in the film. On its silver anniversary, we argue that Gattacaremains an important reflection of society’s expectations and fears with respect to the ways that geneticscience has manifested in the real world. In an accompanying appendix, we offer some thought questionsto guide group discussions inside and outside of the classroom.","journal":"OSF Preprints (OSF Preprints)","year":2022,"id":310372,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":0,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9341,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2022-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":355113,"name":"Michael D.
