Introducing the DYNAMIC approach.","abstract":"Clinical psychology faces substantial obstacles in developing more efficacious treatments for mental disorders. In contrast to other medical disciplines, psychotherapy has made limited progress in improving treatment outcomes. We introduce DYNAMIC (Dynamic Network Approach to Mental Health to Stimulate Innovations and for Interventions and Changes), a framework that utilizes dynamic network analysis to address the challenges faced by contemporary clinical research. These challenges include the absence of a comprehensive psychological meta-theory, comorbidity, substantial diagnostic heterogeneity, violations of ergodicity assumptions, and a limited understanding of causal processes. Through the application of DYNAMIC, we describe how to advance clinical research by specifically addressing these central problems. By utilizing dynamic network analysis techniques (e.g., Group Iterative Multiple Model Estimation, multivariate Granger causality, deep neural networks), multimodal measurements (e.g., psychological, psychopathological, and neurobiological data), intensive longitudinal data collection (e.g., Ecological Momentary Assessment), and causal inference methods (e.g., Bayesian networks), DYNAMIC aims to improve our comprehension and treatment of mental disorders. Under the umbrella of the systems approach and utilizing insights from e.g., graph theory and control theory, we integrate data from multimodal measurements, to offer a comprehensive understanding of mental disorders as dynamic networks of interconnected symptoms.
