{"doi":"10.2460/ajvr.2004.65.1233","title":"Effect of strain and serotype of vesicular stomatitis virus on viral shedding, vesicular lesion development, and contact transmission in pigs","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title>\n                  <jats:p>\n                    <jats:bold>Objective</jats:bold>\n                    —To determine whether pigs can be infected\nwith strains of vesicular stomatitis virus New\nJersey (VSV-NJ) and vesicular stomatitis virus Indiana\n(VSV-I) isolated during recent vesicular stomatitis outbreaks\nthat primarily involved horses in the western\nUnited States and determine the potential for these\nviruses to be transmitted by contact.\n                  </jats:p>\n                  <jats:p>\n                    <jats:bold>Animals</jats:bold>\n                    —128 pigs.\n                  </jats:p>\n                  <jats:p>\n                    <jats:bold>Procedure</jats:bold>\n                    —Pigs were challenged with VSV-NJ or\nVSV-I from the 1995 and 1997 outbreaks of vesicular\nstomatitis in the western United States, respectively,\nor with VSV-NJ (OS) associated with vesicular stomatitis\nin feral pigs on Ossabaw Island, Ga. Pigs\n(3/group) were inoculated with each virus via 3 routes\nand evaluated for viral shedding, seroconversion, and\nthe development of vesicular lesions. In another\nexperiment, the potential for contact transmission of\neach virus from experimentally infected to naïve pigs\nwas evaluated.\n                  </jats:p>\n                  <jats:p>\n                    <jats:bold>Results</jats:bold>\n                    —Infection of pigs was achieved for all 3\nviruses as determined by virus isolation and detection\nof seroconversion. In inoculated pigs, all 3 viruses\nwere isolated from multiple swab samples at concentrations\nsufficient to infect other pigs. However, compared\nwith results obtained with the 2 VSV-NJ strains,\nviral titers associated with VSV-I were low and the\nduration of virus shedding was reduced. Results from\nthe contact transmission trials were consistent with\nthese results; virus transmission was detected most\nfrequently with the VSV-NJ strains.\n                  </jats:p>\n                  <jats:p>\n                    <jats:bold>Conclusions and Clinical Relevance</jats:bold>\n                    —Pigs can be\ninfected with VSV-NJ and VSV-I. Differences in the\nextent of viral shedding and potential for contact\ntransmission were apparent between serotypes but\nnot between the VSV-NJ strains investigated.
