{"doi":"10.2460/ajvr.1986.47.02.426","title":"Effect of selenium deficiency on caprine polymorphonuclear leukocyte production of leukotriene B4 and its neutrophil chemotactic activity","abstract":"<jats:title>SUMMARY</jats:title>\n<jats:p>These studies were designed to measure leukotriene B<jats:sub>4 </jats:sub>(<jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub>) production by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (<jats:sc>pmn</jats:sc>) from selenium (Se)-deficient and Se-adequate goats. Leukotriene B<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> was measured by both radioimmune and chemotactic activity assays in supernatants of <jats:sc>pmn</jats:sc> stimulated by calcium ionophore A23187. The concentration of <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4 </jats:sub>produced by <jats:sc>pmn</jats:sc> from Se-deficient goats was significantly (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> &lt; 0.05) lower than the concentration of <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4 </jats:sub>produced by <jats:sc>pmn</jats:sc> from Se-adequate goats. Neutrophil chemotactic activity of <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub> was found to be directly dependent (<jats:italic>r</jats:italic><jats:sup>2</jats:sup> = 0.85) on the <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub> concentration. When supernatants from Se-deficient and Se-adequate goats were adsorbed with caprine neutrophils, significant (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> &lt; 0.05) reduction in <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub> was found in supernatants from both groups. Furthermore, neutrophil adsorption of <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub> from supernatants of both groups was indicated by significantly (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> &lt; 0.05) decreased chemotaxis to <jats:sc>ltb</jats:sc><jats:sub>4</jats:sub> supernatants. Decrease in chemotactic response was, however, significantly (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic> &lt; 0.05) lower when neutrophils were treated with supernatants from Se-deficient goats.
