The disorder is specific to pregnancy characterized by new onset of hypertension and end-organ dysfunction including proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. Preeclampsia usually presents during pregnancy; however, it may sometimes manifest in the postpartum period in a previously normotensive woman. Hypertension in pregnancy is defined as blood pressure of greater than 140 mm Hg systolic or 90 mm Hg diastolic, or both.
