Histamine has been suggested as a causative agent (1-3), as a protective agent (4, 5), and as being unimportant (6, 7). A recent study suggesting the protective nature of histamine against radiation damage was that of Schleich (5) in which 40 % of white mice pretreated with 5 mg of histamine dihydrochloride survived 1500 r for more than 30 days. However, there have been a number of studies in which antihistamines have been tested as radioprotective drugs (2, 3) with apparent success. The basis of these latter studies was that histamine released as a result of irradiation was associated with tissue damage. Also, the fact that histamine can be formed from histidine by radiation (8) has been invoked as a possible mechanism of radiation damage. A recent hypothesis of Schayer (9) postulated the inductive increase of the enzyme L-histidine decarboxylase as a general response to stress in mammals. The ability of the animal to cope with the extra histamine so produced is said to determine the response of this animal to the stress. Another recent and relevant hypothesis presented by Kahlson and his associates (10) suggests that histamine may be a requirement for wound healing. Histidine decarboxylase activity and tissue repair correlated well in their studies. Fenton and West (11) also found that histamine was beneficial for wound healing.
