Changes in ABC transporter expression and function are thought to be implicated in various diseases, such as cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The availability of a non-invasive imaging method which allows for measuring ABC transporter function or expression in vivo would be of great clinical use in that it could facilitate the identification of those patients that would benefit from treatment with ABC transporter modulating drugs. To date three different kinds of imaging probes have been described to measure ABC transporters in vivo: i) radiolabelled transporter substrates ii) radiolabelled transporter inhibitors and iii) radiolabelled prodrugs which are enzymatically converted into transporter substrates in the organ of interest (e.g. brain). The design of new imaging probes to visualize efflux transporters is inter alia complicated by the overlapping substrate recognition pattern of different ABC transporter types. The present article will describe currently available ABC transporter radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and critically discuss strengths and limitations of individual probes and their potential clinical applications.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.143134726391533,"endowment":4.143134726391533,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21434859","pmcid":"PMC3691789","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2112052019","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Austrian Science Fund FWF","grant_id":"F 3513","title":null},{"funder_name":"European Commission","grant_id":"201380","title":"EUropean Research initiative to develop Imaging Probes for early In-vivo Diagnosis and Evaluation of response to therapeutic Substances"}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":3.7699,"citation_percentile":0.94722601,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":6},{"year":2013,"count":9},{"year":2014,"count":14},{"year":2015,"count":11},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2018,"count":5},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://eurekaselect.com/article/download/75125","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.2174/138920011798356980","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21434859","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3691789","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3691789","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc3691789?pdf=render","host_type":""},{"url":"https://ucrisportal.univie.ac.at/de/publications/5c3966ce-23b7-41ee-8c89-aac738a23e57","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.2174/138920011798356980","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2174/138920011798356980","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Drug Transport and Resistance Mechanisms","Pharmacological Effects and Toxicity Studies","Amino Acid Enzymes and Metabolism","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences","ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters","Animals","Biological Transport, Active","Gene Expression","Humans","Pharmaceutical Preparations","Positron-Emission Tomography","Radiopharmaceuticals","Tissue Distribution","Tomography, Emission-Computed, Single-Photon"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Biological Transport, Active","Pharmaceutical Preparations","Humans","Tissue Distribution","Gene Expression","Tomography, Emission-Computed, Single-Photon","ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters","Radiopharmaceuticals","Positron-Emission Tomography"],"keywords":["Abcg2","ATP-binding cassette transporter","Transporter","P-glycoprotein","Efflux","Positron emission tomography","In vivo","Blood–brain barrier","Solute carrier family","Pharmacology","Biology","Multiple drug resistance","Chemistry","Biochemistry","Drug resistance","Neuroscience","Gene","Genetics","Central nervous system","Tomography, Emission-Computed, Single-Photon","Biological Transport, Active","Gene Expression","301207 Pharmazeutische Chemie","SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being","Pharmaceutical Preparations","SDG 3 – Gesundheit und Wohlergehen","Positron-Emission Tomography","Animals","Humans","ATP-Binding Cassette Transporters","Tissue Distribution","Radiopharmaceuticals","301207 Pharmaceutical chemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
