The revised payment rates and other changes to the hospital inpatient prospective payment systems (IPPS) are described in a final rule published in the August 12 Federal Register. Major changes that will take effect when the fiscal year begins on October 1 include the creation of a new diagnosis-related group (DRG) for patients who receive a thrombolytic agent for the treatment of ischemic stroke; the revision of DRGs for cardiac care to capture costs associated with severe disease; and new reporting requirements for submitting quality-of-care data to CMS. The new fiscal year brings a new DRG, 559, which includes 10 clinical codes related to the treatment of ischemic stroke.
