This chapter discusses the issues around chronic pain, opioid use, and the resulting epidemic of opioid dependency and abuse. It defines pain and categories of pain and reviews issues related to the chronic pain epidemic. It compares clinical studies related to opioid use and lists issues associated with the opioid epidemic. The epidemic of opioid prescriptions flies in the face of evidence that opioids are only modestly useful for chronic pain and their effects on function. Moreover, long-term use is often associated with adverse effects and requires the use of other prescription medications to treat them. About 2.1 million persons in the United States live with opioid use disorder.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.6931471805599453,"endowment":0.6931471805599453,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"19910364","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4256571114","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.70383142,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"gold","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://connect.springerpub.com/binary/sgrworks/32a116bdef962708/afd3e68d9fbfcc5d772196d1de37e4587e94d4afd3f49294125f2f4c8f7a5c8d/9780826143129_0001.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://connect.springerpub.com/binary/sgrworks/32a116bdef962708/afd3e68d9fbfcc5d772196d1de37e4587e94d4afd3f49294125f2f4c8f7a5c8d/9780826143129_0001.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1891/9780826143129.0001","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1891/9780826143129.0001","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Opioid Use Disorder Treatment","Pain Management and Opioid Use","Pain Mechanisms and Treatments"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Opioid","Chronic pain","Addiction","Medicine","Opioid epidemic","Medical prescription","Opioid addiction","Psychiatry","Intensive care medicine","Internal medicine","Pharmacology"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T10:28:23.841342Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
