{"doi":"10.18632/aging.103156","title":"The relation of poor mastication with cognition and dementia risk: a population-based longitudinal study","abstract":"We investigated the effect of poor masticatory ability on cognitive trajectories and dementia risk in older adults. 544 cognitively intact adults aged ≥50 were followed for up to 22 years. Cognitive domains (verbal, spatial/fluid, memory, and perceptual speed) were assessed at baseline and follow-ups. Dementia was ascertained according to standard criteria. Masticatory ability was assessed using the Eichner Index and categorized according to the number of posterior occlusal zones: A (all four), B (3-1), and C (none). At baseline, 147 (27.0%) participants were in Eichner category A, 169 (31.1%) in B and 228 (41.9%) in C. After the age of 65, participants in Eichner category B and C showed an accelerated decline in spatial/fluid abilities (β: -0.16, 95% CI: -0.30 to -0.03) and (β: -0.15, 95% CI: -0.28 to -0.02), respectively. Over the follow-up, 52 incident dementia cases were identified. Eichner categories B or C were not associated with an increased risk of dementia, compared to category A (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.39 to 1.76 and HR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.30 to 1.29, respectively).Poor masticatory ability is associated with an accelerated cognitive decline in fluid/spatial abilities, however it was not related to a higher risk of dementia.","journal":"Aging","year":2020,"id":103935,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":24,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9397,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2020-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":505313,"name":"Anna Marseglia","orcid":"0000-0002-9672-6978","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":505314,"name":"Inger Wårdh","orcid":"0000-0003-0939-802X","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":505912,"name":"Per Stjernfeldt Elgestad","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":505315,"name":"Debora Rizzuto","orcid":"0000-0001-6199-9629","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":505316,"name":"Ying Shang","orcid":"0000-0002-1496-1799","position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":348135,"name":"Weili Xu","orcid":"0000-0001-6140-2968","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":5347,"name":"Nancy L.
