Breastfeeding has wide-ranging health benefits for both the mother and her child; however, many factors contribute to low rates of exclusive breastfeeding. This article highlights the benefits of optimal breastfeeding as well as trends and determinants associated with breastfeeding both worldwide and in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Strategies to optimise breastfeeding and overcome breastfeeding barriers in the GCC region are recommended, including community health and education programmes and 'baby-friendly' hospital initiatives. Advocates of breastfeeding are needed at the national, community and family levels. In addition, more systematic research should be conducted to examine breastfeeding practices and the best strategies to promote breastfeeding in this region.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.0943445622221,"endowment":4.0943445622221,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"28690886","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2641900370","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":3.7646,"citation_percentile":0.9413629,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2018,"count":7},{"year":2019,"count":4},{"year":2020,"count":12},{"year":2021,"count":14},{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":7},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.18295/squmj.2016.17.02.004","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.18295/squmj.2016.17.02.004","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://mjournal.squ.edu.om/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1888&context=home","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28690886","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/9a942861ddfa476296cf976a4b9b2570","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/5488815","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Breastfeeding Practices and Influences","Child Nutrition and Water Access","Child Nutrition and Feeding Issues","Bahrain","Breast Feeding","Female","Global Health","Health Promotion","Humans","Infant","Infant Food","Infant, Newborn","Kuwait","Mothers","Oman","Qatar","Saudi Arabia","United Arab Emirates"],"mesh_terms":["Bahrain","Breast Feeding","Female","Health Promotion","Humans","Infant","Infant Food","Infant, Newborn","Kuwait","Mothers","Oman","Qatar","Saudi Arabia","United Arab Emirates","Global Health"],"keywords":["Breastfeeding","Medicine","Breast feeding","Environmental health","Family medicine","Nursing","Pediatrics","Arab World","Health Planning Recommendations","Maternal-Child Health Services","Trends"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Partnerships for the goals"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-28T14:02:26.476881Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
