{"doi":"10.18174/533039","title":"Anticipating the future : The role of predictable structure in plant-herbivore interactions in the evolution of defence strategies in Brassicaceae","abstract":"Temporal correlations between external stimuli and stress are common for most organisms, providing an opportunity to anticipate sub-optimal conditions and adjust their phenotype accordingly By integrating predictable patterns of attack by herbivores or pathogens in their defence strategies, plants can anticipate these biotic stresses and maximize life-time fitness.However, it is unclear under which ecological conditions such strategies are adaptive. Selection on plants to integrate (un)predictable patterns of different sources of stress in their strategies can lead to sub-optimal responses to each stressor in isolation.This limits our understanding of the ecological and physiological constraints of plant responses to stress.
