This study aimed to investigate the incidence, clinical and\nendoscopic findings, and management of the disease in a prospective 1-year\nfollow-up period. Materials and Methods:\nOverall, 4185 patients underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy at the Endoscopy\nUnit of Erzurum Education and Research Hospital between February 2010 and February\n2011. Among these, the patients diagnosed with drug-induced esophagitis were\nfollowed up prospectively. Results:\nAmong patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 1926 (46%) were males with\na mean age of 47.8±18.1 years (range, 12–100 years). In total, 760 patients (18%)\nwere diagnosed with esophagitis, of which five had drug-induced esophagitis (0.012%\nof gastroscopies, 0.65% of esophagitis). All patients presented with symptoms of\nretrosternal pain, odynophagia, and dysphagia. Four patients were young women, whereas\nthe remaining patient was an elderly man; based on the medical history and esophagogastroduodenoscopy\nfindings, patients diagnosed with esophagitis were using doxycycline,\ntetracycline, and tramadol hydrochloride capsules. Drugs that were considered to\nbe the causative agents of esophagitis were discontinued, and proton pump\ninhibitors were administered parenterally or orally. The patients recovered\nwithout any complications. Conclusion:\nDrug-induced esophagitis is considered to be a rare condition, presenting with varying\nesophagogastroduodenoscopy findings and severe esophagitis in some cases.
