In addition to their superior depth-dose distribution, heavy ions offer notable biological benefits over protons. Specifically, at therapeutic energies, very heavy ions are expected to exhibit high relative biological effectiveness and a low oxygen enhancement ratio, making them potentially ideal for treating radioresistant tumors. Over fifty years ago, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory started a clinical trial to treat cancer patients with particles ranging from helium to argon. However, treatments with ions of atomic number greater than 10 proved highly toxic to normal tissue. Most patients ultimately received treatment with helium ions, which have biological effects similar to those of protons. In recent years, novel strategies have emerged that can reduce normal tissue toxicity in radiotherapy while preserving tumor control. These advancements open the possibility of revisiting the clinical use of heavier ions. In this paper, we propose that neon ions may serve as an effective modality for treating resistant, hypoxic tumors. Their associated toxicity may be mitigated by employing approaches such as ultra-high-dose-rate (FLASH) or spatially fractionated radiotherapy. Current plans and prospects for the clinical application of neon ions will be discussed.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"41448585","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W7117380314","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.60032823,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://radiation-research.kglmeridian.com/view/journals/rare/aop/article-10.1667-RADE-25-00177.1/article-10.1667-RADE-25-00177.1.xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://radiation-research.kglmeridian.com/downloadpdf/journals/rare/aop/article-10.1667-RADE-25-00177.1/article-10.1667-RADE-25-00177.1.xml","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1667/rade-25-00177.1","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41448585","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Radiation Therapy and Dosimetry","Hydrogen's biological and therapeutic effects","Chemical and Physical Studies","Humans","Heavy Ion Radiotherapy","Neoplasms","Precision Medicine","Heavy Ions"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","Neoplasms","Heavy Ions","Precision Medicine","Heavy Ion Radiotherapy"],"keywords":["Oxygen enhancement ratio","Relative biological effectiveness","Neon","Radiation therapy","Ion","Biological effect","Toxicity","Radioresistance","Helium"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T03:53:30.831490Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
