{"doi":"10.1530/ey.17.15.7","title":"Childhood obesity intervention studies: A narrative review and guide for investigators, authors, editors, reviewers, journalists, and readers to guard against exaggerated effectiveness claims","abstract":"This is a thoughtful position statement by a number of leading obesity researchers and statisticians. They draw attention to 10 errors that are common in the scientific literature: 1. Using self-reported outcomes and ‘teaching to the test’ (achieving better scores simply by repeat testing); 2. Lack of control groups and ignoring regression to the mean over time; 3. Changing the goal posts (i.e. the study primary outcome); 4. Ignoring clustering when randomizing groups of children; 5. Subsetting the data, p-hacking and data dredging (to produce false positives); 6. Relying on difference from baseline (rather than between groups); 7. Equating ‘no statistically significant difference’ with ‘equally effective’; 8. Prioritising observational analyses over intervention effects; 9. One-sided tests for statistical significance; and 10. Stating that effects are clinically significant when not statistically significant.","journal":"Yearbook of pediatric endocrinology","year":2020,"id":115894,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":2,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9608,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2020-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":543258,"name":"Altman Dg","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":371550,"name":"Tom Baranowski","orcid":"0000-0002-0653-2222","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543259,"name":"JM Bland","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543260,"name":"Dawson Ja","orcid":null,"position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543261,"name":"Dhurandhar Nv","orcid":null,"position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543262,"name":"Shima Dowla","orcid":null,"position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543263,"name":"Fontaine KR","orcid":null,"position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543264,"name":"Amy Gelman","orcid":null,"position":8,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543265,"name":"SB Heymsfield","orcid":null,"position":9,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":542657,"name":"Wasantha Jayawardene","orcid":"0000-0002-8798-0894","position":10,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543266,"name":"Keith Sw","orcid":null,"position":11,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":464499,"name":"Kyle TK","orcid":null,"position":12,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":627,"name":"Eric Loken","orcid":null,"position":13,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543267,"name":"Oakes JM","orcid":null,"position":14,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543268,"name":"Jade Stevens","orcid":null,"position":15,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":543269,"name":"Thomas Dm","orcid":null,"position":16,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":71621,"name":"David B.
