The success in converting a proof-of-concept peptide T-20 (previously named DP-178), from the C-terminal heptad repeat (CHR) region of the envelope glycoprotein gp41 of HIV-1, to a drug named enfuvirtide was one of the phenomenal successes in HIV-1 drug discovery research that has been made in recent years. There were many reports of modifying peptides from the N-terminal heptad repeat and CHR regions with the objective of improving their activity. A few laboratories also reported the identification of small-molecule inhibitors that apparently bind to the hydrophobic cavity identified in the gp41 core structure and prevent the CHR peptide binding to the N-terminal heptad repeat peptide, thereby prevent the formation of the typical six-helix bundle, which has been thought to be necessary for the fusion between HIV and cell membranes.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"16634685","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"AI62402-01A1","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"AI54147","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":null,"license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1517/13543784.15.5.465","host_type":"publisher"}],"fields_of_study":[],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Humans","HIV-1","HIV Infections","Peptides","HIV Envelope Protein gp41","Anti-HIV Agents","Drug Delivery Systems","Amino Acid Sequence","Molecular Sequence Data"],"keywords":[],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-28T14:57:58.084760Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
