{"doi":"10.1373/jalm.2018.026492","title":"Comparing Ethnicity-Specific Reference Intervals for Clinical Laboratory Tests from EHR Data","abstract":"
Background
The results of clinical laboratory tests are an essential component of medical decision-making. To guide interpretation, test results are returned with reference intervals defined by the range in which the central 95% of values occur in healthy individuals. Clinical laboratories often set their own reference intervals to accommodate variation in local population and instrumentation. For some tests, reference intervals change as a function of sex, age, and self-identified race and ethnicity.
Methods
In this work, we develop a novel approach, which leverages electronic health record data, to identify healthy individuals and tests for differences in laboratory test values between populations.
Results
We found that the distributions of >50% of laboratory tests with currently fixed reference intervals differ among self-identified racial and ethnic groups (SIREs) in healthy individuals.
Conclusions
Our results confirm the known SIRE-specific differences in creatinine and suggest that more research needs to be done to determine the clinical implications of using one-size-fits-all reference intervals for other tests with SIRE-specific distributions.","journal":"The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine","year":2018,"id":11786,"datarank":0.5456379239589579,"base_score":3.6375861597263857,"endowment":3.6375861597263857,"self_citation_contribution":0.5456379239589579,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.5456379239589579,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":37,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.0446,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2018-11-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":15913,"name":"Hyojung Paik","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":21592,"name":"Boris Oskotsky","orcid":"0000-0002-9364-7051","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":94775,"name":"Ruth Tor","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":52036,"name":"Elad Ziv","orcid":"0000-0002-2324-2884","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":24103,"name":"Noah Zaitlen","orcid":"0000-0002-3553-3670","position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":51,"name":"Atul Janardhan Butte","orcid":"0000-0002-7433-2740","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":15919,"name":"Harikrishna Paik","orcid":"0000-0002-3994-0695","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":15915,"name":"Nadav Rappoport","orcid":"0000-0002-7218-2558","position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":38,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-03-01T18:20:47.508186Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
