In order to better understand the role of PGN in infection, we wanted to gain insight into the cellular receptor for PGN. Although the receptor was initially identified as Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), this receptor has remained controversial and other PGN receptors have been reported. We produced PGN from live cultures of Bacillus anthracis and Staphylococcus aureus and tested samples of PGN isolated during the purification process to determine at what point TLR2 activity was removed, if at all. Our results indicate that although live B. anthracis and S. aureus express abundant TLR2 ligands, highly-purified PGN from either bacterial source is not recognized by TLR2.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.70805020110221,"endowment":2.70805020110221,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"29474374","pmcid":"PMC5825070","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2793472432","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases","grant_id":"3U19 AI062629","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases","grant_id":"R21 AI113020","title":null},{"funder_name":"BLRD VA","grant_id":"I01 BX001937","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"U19 AI062629","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1R21AI113020-01","title":"Development of a mouse model of peptidoglycan-induced pathology"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1U19AI062629-01","title":"Regulation of Macrophage Apoptosis by Anthrax Lethal Factor"},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"3U19AI062629-16S1","title":"Molecular and Immunologic Analysis of the Pathobiology of Human Anthrax"}],"total_grants":7,"fwci":0.5056,"citation_percentile":0.59110314,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0193207&type=printable","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0193207&type=printable","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0193207","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0193207","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29474374","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/5825070","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/02120cd74e8243bf9cdad7fe74a81953","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC5825070","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC5825070?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0193207","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0193207","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Immune Response and Inflammation","Antimicrobial Peptides and Activities","Pneumonia and Respiratory Infections","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences","Animals","Bacillus anthracis","Female","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Male","Mice","Mice, Mutant Strains","Peptidoglycan","Staphylococcus aureus","Toll-Like Receptor 2"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Bacillus anthracis","Female","Humans","Immunity, Innate","Male","Mice, Mutant Strains","Peptidoglycan","Staphylococcus aureus","Toll-Like Receptor 2","Mice"],"keywords":["TLR2","Innate immune system","Peptidoglycan","Toll-like receptor","Microbiology","Receptor","Biology","NOD1","TLR4","Pathogen-associated molecular pattern","Immune system","Staphylococcus aureus","Bacillus anthracis","Pattern recognition receptor","Toll-Like Receptor 9","Immunology","Bacteria","NOD2","Cell wall","Biochemistry","Male","Science","Q","R","Immunity, Innate","Mice, Mutant Strains","Toll-Like Receptor 2","Mice","Medicine","Animals","Humans","Female","Research Article"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
