However, recent studies point to an additional iron metabolism disorder in WD patients. The purpose of our study was to examine susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) manifestations of WD in the brains of WD patients. METHODS: A total of 33 patients with WD and 18 normal controls underwent conventional MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) and SWI. The phase values were measured on SWI-filtered phase images of the bilateral head of the caudate nuclei, globus pallidus, putamen, thalamus, substantia nigra, and red nucleus. Student's t-tests were used to compare the phase values between WD groups and normal controls. RESULTS: The mean phase values for the bilateral head of the caudate nuclei, globus pallidus, putamen, thalamus, substantia nigra, and red nucleus were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.001), and bilateral putamen was most strongly affected. CONCLUSIONS: There is paramagnetic mineralization deposition in brain gray nuclei of WD patients and SWI is an effective method to evaluate these structures.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.367295829986474,"endowment":3.367295829986474,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25915414","pmcid":"PMC4411130","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1990791884","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":3.0198,"citation_percentile":0.90408423,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":6},{"year":2018,"count":6},{"year":2019,"count":1},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2021,"count":3},{"year":2022,"count":2},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0125100&type=printable","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0125100&type=printable","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0125100","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0125100","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25915414","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/4411130","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/feefaea630ba4a7380f93a37c4befed4","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4411130","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC4411130?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Trace Elements in Health","Heavy Metal Exposure and Toxicity","Celiac Disease Research and Management"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Brain","Child","Copper","Disease Susceptibility","Female","Hepatolenticular Degeneration","Humans","Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Male","Metabolic Diseases","Young Adult"],"keywords":["Putamen","Globus pallidus","Caudate nucleus","Substantia nigra","Susceptibility weighted imaging","Red nucleus","Wilson's disease","Medicine","Magnetic resonance imaging","Thalamus","Basal ganglia","5-HT4 receptor","Pathology","Nuclear magnetic resonance","Nuclear medicine","Internal medicine","Parkinson's disease","Nucleus","Radiology","Central nervous system","Disease","Psychiatry","Physics"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-12T08:41:09.717981Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
