Based on recent work in vision, we here consider an alternative perspective that sensory percepts are based on past experience. In this framework, basic auditory qualities (e.g., loudness and pitch) are based on the frequency of occurrence of stimulus patterns in natural acoustic stimuli. To explore this concept of audition, we examined five well-documented psychophysical functions. The frequency of occurrence of acoustic patterns in a database of natural sound stimuli (speech) predicts some qualitative aspects of these functions, but with substantial quantitative discrepancies. This approach may offer a rationale for auditory phenomena that are difficult to explain in terms of the physical attributes of the stimuli as such.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.1354942159291497,"endowment":3.1354942159291497,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23667666","pmcid":"PMC3646789","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2015776358","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"National Science Foundation","grant_id":"0924181","title":"The Biological Basis of Musical Tonality"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":0.8802,"citation_percentile":0.77127983,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2019,"count":16},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0063728&type=printable","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0063728&type=printable","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0063728","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0063728","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23667666","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3646789","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.815.7511","host_type":""},{"url":"http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/126465","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0063728","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/9e610f9a204241fb8065762279c7d9b9","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/_Are_Auditory_Percepts_Determined_by_Experience_/699505","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3646789","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3646789?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0063728","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0063728","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Multisensory perception and integration","Hearing Loss and Rehabilitation","Neural dynamics and brain function","0301 basic medicine","0303 health sciences","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Acoustic Stimulation","Audiometry, Pure-Tone","Auditory Perception","Female","Humans","Loudness Perception","Male","Pitch Perception"],"keywords":["Loudness","Stimulus (psychology)","Natural sounds","Perception","Auditory scene analysis","Auditory stimuli","Auditory perception","Sensory system","Selective auditory attention","Computer science","Cognitive psychology","Perspective (graphical)","Psychology","Speech recognition","Neuroscience","Cognition","Artificial intelligence","Selective attention","Male","Science","Loudness Perception","Q","R","Acoustic Stimulation","Medicine","Audiometry, Pure-Tone","Humans","Female","Pitch Perception","Research Article"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Quality Education"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T16:32:40.714813Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
