Fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL and A1C ≥ 6.5% were used, separately, to define diabetes. Subjects with a current diagnosis of diabetes were excluded. 964 of 988 subjects were included in this analysis. Overall, 0.9% (95%CI 0.3-1.5) and 3.5% (95%CI 2.4-4.7) had diabetes using fasting glucose and A1C criteria, respectively. Compared to those classified as having diabetes using fasting glucose, newly classified subjects with diabetes using A1C (n = 25), were older, poorer, thinner and more likely to come from rural areas. Of these, 40% (10/25) had impaired fasting glucose (IFG).
Conclusions
This study shows that the use of A1C as diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes mellitus identifies people of different characteristics than fasting glucose. In the PERU MIGRANT population using A1C to define diabetes tripled the prevalence; the increase was more marked among poorer and rural populations. More than half the newly diagnosed people with diabetes using A1C had normal fasting glucose.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21464957","pmcid":"PMC3064652","openalex_id":null,"authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Wellcome Trust","grant_id":"074833","title":"The effect on cardiovascular risk factors of migration from rural to urban areas in Lima, Peru."},{"funder_name":"National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)","grant_id":"NF-SI-0510-10090","title":null},{"funder_name":"Wellcome Trust","grant_id":"GR074833MA","title":null},{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"HHSN268200900033C","title":null}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0018069&type=printable","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/bf4a14bd64c1406bbdfafd7715fd6808","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3064652","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3064652","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3064652?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0018069","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.60692/ead56-nqn29","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.60692/krj5v-55669","host_type":""},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21464957","host_type":""},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0018069","host_type":""},{"url":"https://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/id/eprint/964/1/pone.0018069.pdf","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0018069","host_type":""},{"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12866/11086","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["0302 clinical medicine","03 medical and health sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Humans","Diabetes Mellitus","Blood Glucose","Fasting","Emigration and Immigration","Adult","Aged","Aged, 80 and over","Middle Aged","Income","Peru","Female","Male","Glycated Hemoglobin"],"keywords":["Blood Glucose","Male","Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism","migration","Diabetes mellitus","Endocrinology","lowest income group","Peru","hemoglobin A1c","Internal medicine","Genetics and Pathogenesis of Type 1 Diabetes","Aged, 80 and over","clinical article","non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus","Q","Diabetes","R","Life Sciences","Type 2 diabetes","Fasting","Emigration and Immigration","Middle Aged","Management of Diabetes Mellitus and Hypoglycemia","Impaired fasting glucose","Environmental health","Income","Type 1 Diabetes","Medicine","https://purl.org/pe-repo/ocde/ford#3.01.00","Female","diagnostic value","Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease","diet restriction","Research Article","diagnostic agent","Adult","Science","prevalence","Population","blood","Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology","Health Sciences","Genetics","Humans","controlled study","rural population","Hemoglobin","glycosylated hemoglobin","Aged","Hemoglobin A, Glycosylated","Glycated Hemoglobin","Fasting glucose","high risk population","Impaired glucose tolerance","Insulin resistance","glucose blood level","age","FOS: Biological sciences","Continuous Glucose Monitoring","metabolism"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
