Traditional sources of information about the descriptive epidemiology of diseases, injuries, and risk factors are generally incomplete, fragmented, and of uncertain reliability and comparability. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study has provided a conceptual and methodological framework to quantify and compare the health of populations using a summary measure of both mortality and disability, the disability-adjusted life year (DALY).This paper describes key features of the Global Burden of Disease analytic approach, which provides a standardized measurement framework to permit comparisons across diseases and injuries, as well as risk factors, and a systematic approach to the evaluation of data. The paper describes the evolution of the GBD, starting from the first study for the year 1990, summarizes the methodological improvements incorporated into GBD revisions for the years 2000-2004 carried out by the World Health Organization, and examines priorities and issues for the next major GBD study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and commencing in 2007.The paper presents an overview of summary results from the Global Burden of Disease study 2002, with a particular focus on the neglected tropical diseases, and also an overview of the comparative risk assessment for 26 global risk factors. Taken together, trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, intestinal nematode infections, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, and leprosy accounted for an estimated 177,000 deaths worldwide in 2002, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, and about 20 million DALYs, or 1.3% of the global burden of disease and injuries. Further research is currently underway to revise and update these estimates.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":6.236369590203704,"endowment":6.236369590203704,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"18060077","pmcid":"PMC2100367","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2156333745","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIA NIH HHS","grant_id":"P01 AG017625","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIA NIH HHS","grant_id":"P01 AG17625","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"3P01AG017625-03S3","title":"THE GLOBAL BURDEN OF DISEASE 2000 IN AGING POPULATIONS"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":14.7158,"citation_percentile":0.99743302,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":44},{"year":2013,"count":41},{"year":2014,"count":44},{"year":2015,"count":45},{"year":2016,"count":29},{"year":2017,"count":27},{"year":2018,"count":24},{"year":2019,"count":24},{"year":2020,"count":28},{"year":2021,"count":25},{"year":2022,"count":16},{"year":2023,"count":11},{"year":2024,"count":15},{"year":2025,"count":10},{"year":2026,"count":8}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114&type=printable","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114&type=printable","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18060077","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/11343/265315","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:4553306","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doaj.org/article/7898567ce15e4244b1118fc4948d0073","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/Measuring_the_Burden_of_Neglected_Tropical_Diseases_The_Global_Burden_of_Disease_Framework/151449","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/2100367","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC2100367","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC2100367?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114","host_type":""},{"url":"https://api.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:133943","host_type":""},{"url":"https://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:133943","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114","host_type":""},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0000114","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Parasites and Host Interactions","Global Maternal and Child Health","Global Health and Epidemiology","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","Communicable Diseases","Cost of Illness","Global Health","Humans","Quality-Adjusted Life Years","Risk Factors","Tropical Medicine"],"mesh_terms":["Communicable Diseases","Humans","Risk Factors","Tropical Medicine","Global Health","Cost of Illness","Quality-Adjusted Life Years"],"keywords":["Neglected tropical diseases","Tropical disease","Burden of disease","Disease burden","Global health","Disease","Tropical medicine","Medicine","Environmental health","Public health","Pathology","RC955-962","610","Review","infectious diseases","Communicable Diseases","730212 Disease distribution and transmission","C1","Cost of Illness","321202 Epidemiology","Risk Factors","Arctic medicine.
