Similar to other traditional methods, the main advantages of organ-on-a-chip are its high portability, high throughput and ability to replicate microenvironment cells. Thus organ-on-a-chip holds great potential in disease pathogenesis study, drug screening, etc. In this paper, we reviewed the history of organ-on-a-chip and discussed the main constitutions and materials of organs-on-chips. Through evaluating the existing organs-on-chips, we proposed that a highly integrated organ-on-a-chip should include four elements, microfluidic chip, cells or microtissues, microenvironment building implementing parts, and microsensors. The manufacturing methods were summarized for each item. Besides, the latest developments in organ-on-a-chip and clinical technology problems have been added. In the end, this paper addressed organ-on-a-chip’s future directions.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W3119626549","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.12140897,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1360/sst-2019-0384","host_type":"journal"}],"fields_of_study":["3D Printing in Biomedical Research"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Organ-on-a-chip","Software portability","Microfluidic chip","Chip","Computer science","Lab-on-a-chip","Microfluidics","Organ system","Nanotechnology","Disease","Medicine","Materials science","Pathology","Telecommunications"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-12T01:58:44.629671Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
