Most deaths are related to ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF). The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) actively senses and can terminate life threatening arrhythmias automatically, preventing sudden death. Expanded indications for ICD therapy is likely to result in an increase in the number of ICD patients requiring treatment and receiving care in a variety of health care settings therefore it is important that health care professionals dealing with these patients have an understanding of the device.
