Using data from the electronic obstetric database we identified all singleton deliveries from 1999 to 2005 and calculated annual caesarean rates. There were 96 958 analyzable singleton births of which 20 976 (21.8%) were caesarean deliveries. Caesarean section rates increased from 15.8% in 1999 to 31.8% in 2004. The risk for caesarean delivery increased with advanced maternal age and nulliparity independent of previous caesarean section. The highest caesarean section rates for births with low apgar score (LAS) coincided with a progressive decrease in delivery of LAS babies in the last three years (r=−0.965, p=0.03). The rise in caesarean delivery rates at MNH is relatively high, but a careful cost–benefit analysis is needed to be able to implement any meaningful interventions.
","journal":"African Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health","year":2008,"id":679110,"datarank":0.47032413238937254,"base_score":3.1354942159291497,"endowment":3.1354942159291497,"self_citation_contribution":0.47032413238937254,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.47032413238937254,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":22,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":1774382,"name":"HL Kidanto","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1774384,"name":"MR Kazaura","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1774387,"name":"SN Massawe","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":1774381,"name":"PS Muganyizi","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"resolved":true,"title":"Caesarean section: trend and associated factors in Tanzania","abstract":"
This study estimates trends in caesarean deliveries and associated factors among singleton births during the past seven years at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
