We present an overview of concepts that should be considered when using biomonitoring or biomonitoring data, assess the current status of biomonitoring, and detail potential advancements in the field that may improve our ability to both collect and interpret biomonitoring data. We discuss issues such as the appropriateness of biomonitoring for a given study, the sampling time frame, temporal variability in biological measurements to nonpersistent chemicals, and the complex issues surrounding data interpretation. In addition, we provide recommendations to improve the utility of biomonitoring in farmworker studies.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.382026634673881,"endowment":4.382026634673881,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"16759998","pmcid":"PMC1480485","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1988509485","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIOSH CDC HHS","grant_id":"R13 OH013378","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIEHS NIH HHS","grant_id":"R13 ES013378","title":null},{"funder_name":"National Institutes of Health","grant_id":"1R13ES013378-01","title":"Farmwoker Environmental Health Research Comparable Data"}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":5.7643,"citation_percentile":0.9540056,"influential_citations":3,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":5},{"year":2013,"count":5},{"year":2014,"count":3},{"year":2015,"count":3},{"year":2016,"count":3},{"year":2017,"count":2},{"year":2018,"count":5},{"year":2019,"count":6},{"year":2020,"count":4},{"year":2021,"count":5},{"year":2022,"count":5},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":1},{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"public-domain","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":"GOLD"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/pdf/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16759998","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/1480485","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC1480485","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC1480485?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1289/ehp.8527","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Pesticide Exposure and Toxicity","Carcinogens and Genotoxicity Assessment","Environmental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology","Environmental Science","Medicine","Agricultural and Food Sciences","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","01 natural sciences","0105 earth and related environmental sciences"],"mesh_terms":["Agriculture","Environmental Monitoring","Humans","Pesticides","Skin"],"keywords":["Biomonitoring","Environmental science","Environmental health","Exposure assessment","Environmental chemistry","Medicine","Chemistry","Research","Humans","Agriculture","Pesticides","Environmental Monitoring","Skin"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-09T00:17:51.731897Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
