Graded doses of testosterone propionate were administered to castrated (day 30) male or female rats in parabioses with hypophysectomized (day 33) female partners. Steroid administration was initiated on the day of castration and continued for the duration of the experiment. For those hypophysectomized animals receiving HCG, injections were initiated on day 37 and continued for 4 days. Testosterone propionate decreased castration hypersecretion, as evidenced by the reduced ovarian and uterine weights of the hypophysectomized parabiont. The ovarian weights, however, were not reduced to the weight seen in hypophysectomized animals. The ovarian augmentation response to HCG in the hypophysectomized parabiont was essentially the same at all doses of testosterone propionate which inhibited castration hypersecretion. No dose reduced the augmentation reaction to that seen in hypophysectomized HCG-treated animals paired to noncastrated animals. Castration was required for the ovarian augmentation reaction to be elicited in parabiotic rats. It is tentatively concluded that castrate gonadotrophin is composed of 2 hormones, LH, which is under the control of sex steroids, and FSH, which is relatively unaffected by the level of testosterone propionate.
